elcome to the October 2009 edition of the East Pompano Civic Association newsletter! Note that we have expanded the newsletter to four pages as there is lots of news to cover!  While we believe that some initiatives may be delayed - back to the drawing board for the Pier, for example - we also see real progress on the part of the City in terms of many other projects, such as the Atlantic Boulevard streetscape at the East End and the Harbor Village parking lot improvements.   Drop us a line, visit our website, or give us a call to learn more about the latest news.
As always, if you’d like to include news of an event in our newsletter, please let us know.
Don’t forget that the East Pompano Civic Association is now collecting dues!  $5 a year - a bargain at twice the price!

·          Friday, October 23 and Saturday October 24; Friday October 30 and Saturday October 31Halloween Haunted Trail.  This Haunted House walk is so much fun!  I don’t know the address, but the house is on Atlantic just across the street from the Wendy’s, and there’s a banner in front of it announcing the event.  I believe that the family asks for a $5 donation, and it benefits youth baseball in Pompano.  Always a Halloween highlight for our kids!  You take an escorted walk through the grounds - note that if you have young children, think carefully about doing this, as they can find it quite frightening.
·          Saturday October 24:  “Bit by Bit” rides into Pompano Beach.  This is trĂ©s cool!  This group is now at Sand and Spurs Park (located at 1600 N.E. 5th Avenue); they offer therapeutic and typical horseback riding lessons.  A Grand Opening Extravaganza and Halloween Horse Show Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, October 24th from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Sand and Spurs Park which is located at 1600 N.E. 5th Avenue.  Read more about it at the City website; click on “Press Releases” and choose Press Release 09-078.
·          Thursday October 29 Halloween Fun Fair.  This is a great night for the kids, and it’s for a good cause.  We never miss it.  It’s at the Amphitheater Parking Lot from 6:00pm – 8:30 pm. There’s a Magic Show, Treats, Bella the Clown and Friends, and Fun and Games for children 10 and under.  Admission is 2 canned goods or $2/child.  For more information call the City at 954.786.4111.

·          Friday October 30:  Friday Night Music on the Water returns! Of course, this is THE place to be from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.  Join us and several local Pompano restaurants for another great evening of music, food, and a more detailed look at the real progress the CRA has made in the exciting plans for our City.  Can’t wait to see you there!
·          Wednesday November 18:  A1A Scenic Highway Designation Celebration & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, 4:30 pm- 7:00 pm.  This is very exciting news!  For more information, visit the celebration location at www.bonnethouse.org.
·          Thursday November 19:    Senior Thanksgiving Luncheon.  I don’t know anything about this, but I found this on the City website.  This looks like a very nice event.  It will be held at the E. Pat Larkins Community Center at 11 a.m.  For more information, call the City at 954.786.4585.
·          Thursday November 19:  Sample-McDougald House Fundraiser:  Food, drinks and a cool tour of Cap’s Place.  Friends of the Sample-McDougald House are invited to gather at Cap's Place for a casual early evening get-together that will include food and drink and a special history and tour of Cap's Island by Tom Hasis, co-owner of the establishment. The event will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Tickets are $50 per person, with the proceeds benefiting the Sample-McDougald House. This is a wonderful project to support, and for those of you who’ve been watching, the long delays have finally been cleared and real progress will be seen soon!  Special thanks to Current Builders, who have made a major contribution to the restoration effort.  To learn more about Sample-McDougald House and the ongoing preservation efforts, visit www.samplemcdougaldhouse.com.
·          Thursday November 19:  Wine Tasting, Bispo’s Cellar, 2112 East Atlantic Boulevard, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  Note this is a special “Beaujolais Nouveau” event; only $20 per person as well as Thanksgiving specials; please call 954-788-8117 or email info@bisposcellar.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it  to rsvp.
·          Friday November 20:  Historic “Cruise” on A1A. For all of you car buffs - or beach lovers! - get out there and celebrate a terrific evening of classic cars and (we hope!) cool ocean breezes.  This fun new event (think Tower Shoppes in Davie) will be held on the third Friday of every month.  We attended the inaugural event, on Friday October 16, and we had a blast.  For more information, visit the Chamber at http://www.pompanobeachchamber.com
·          Thursday December 3:  Yuletide on Atlantic.  The City’s annual holiday parade, always a blast.  And this year, the East Pompano Civic Association and the Pompano Beach Historical Society will be entering a float!  The theme is “Pompano:  Past, Present and Future.”  We can’t wait!  Come and help us build, offer your ideas, participate in the parade with us - we’d love to have you!  For more information, contact us ateastpompanocivicassociation@gmail.com.
·          December:  The revival of an old tradition - a holiday decorating contest along Atlantic!  The East Pompano Civic Association, in conjunction with the Greater Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce, is sponsoring this contest.  Great prizes await!
·          January:  The Dog Park opens.  Finally!  Keep up with the latest news about the Dog Park athttp://www.pompanodogpark.com/.
