Cold damages tomatoes. Storing them in the refrigerator destroys an enzyme that produces flavorful compounds and makes water in the tomato expand, turning the flesh mealy.
Your best option is to tightly wrap tomatoes and store at room temperature and consume them in a few days. The shelf life of the tomato has a few more days if stored in the refrigerator but does not make up for the loss in flavor and texture.
