Labor Day Party Ideas

Labor Day is an interesting holiday honoring working people by giving them a day off the clock to have summer parties marking the end of summer.

Most people consider the entire weekend a holiday. It is not unusual to have parties everyday day of the weekend.

Why not have a Beach Blanket Bingo or Luau in your backyard? Both of these types of parties work great inside or outside, with or without a pool, and work well for small gatherings or a huge bash.

Another idea is a clambake, they are a blast. In fact, YaDa Chef is offering, for a limited time, a fantastic deal:

Planning Your Outdoor Party

Who? First thing you need to consider is who is coming; this will lead to what you will be able to do. For the best results invite plenty of people. If you are a teen, then invite as much people as possible (since parties -especially outdoor ones - don't usually turn out great unless there are a lot of guests). Also, the more people the less is needed of you, more people allows everyone to mingle with each other, that way not much is needed of you for entertainment.

Decide what are you going to do? So now that you have the list of invites it's time to think of what you will do with them. Being outdoors makes this easier since there are such a wide variety of things to do. You could be hiking, swimming, biking, eating, just listening to music and dancing, talking. You could have a theme for your party; beach, bonfire. Generally, you should have one main thing to do besides mingling and eating and taking pictures. Perhaps a game or bring along sports equipment for anyone interested.

No matter what you plan on doing there are things that have to be there: Music - ask people to bring their own CD mixes to play & burn one yourself with fast beat songs that are popular right now. Food - Again, you should ask a group of friends to help you purchase/make the food. Keeping it simple is the best option. Bring some pizza or pasta and plenty of junk food. Such as chips, ice cream in a cooler, and pop.

Make sure to have comfortable seating and R&R room - like seats and even tents. (Once again, things might start to get out of reach, and you should ask guests to bring their own)

Plan the duration of the party. When? And For How Long? The party should probably be on a day where you have nothing to worry about the after. Such as during Spring Break or Summer Vacation. Or a weekend. The best days are Fridays and Saturdays. The party should be around a meal time; either lunch or dinner. A lunch party would be nice and relaxing and casual but since the sun is up there's plenty more to do, while a dinner/night kind of party would be more exciting but there wouldn't be as much stuff to do. An outdoor party should be longer than most indoor ones. On average it should be around three or four hours long. Any longer than 5 hours would sound unappealing to guests and less than 2 doesn't give much time to do everything.

Choose a suitable location? This decision affects numbers 1,2 & 3. If you have a theme of a beach, you should go to a beach, maybe a place where you know that there isn't going to be too crowded, an area you would be able to have privacy. Another great place would be going to a campsite - that comes with a camp fire pit. Also great if camp is in the forest, if a night party a suggestion would be to go hiking with flashlights in the dark. Though be cautious since it could be dangerous. Check in the daylight for hazards.

If your city or areas near your city doesn't have such accommodations, then maybe rent out a sports field (local community centre for details) or go to a city park.

Put it into action.Weeks before: Once you've figured out where, when, what, and who. You need to actually start the plan. Find your area, book it, rent it, and talk to your parents if you have to about it. Mark it on your schedule. Contact the guests by email or printed invites. Ask everyone to RSVP and on the invite note to bring their own music and food if possible. With a close group of friends maybe plan all this together so you can all split the cost amongst yourselves.

On the day of: Arrive at area early by a few hours to set everything up. Not much decoration is needed, just have the games/sports equipment ready and play music while guests arrive.

YaDa Chef Tip, Shrimp

When cooking shrimp, the underside tends to shrink more than the top. This causes the shrimp to curl tightly and often cook unevenly inside the curl.

To fix the problem, after peeling and deveining a shrimp, hold it on its back on a cutting board. Use the tip of a pairing knife to make two ¼ inch deep cuts on the underside about ½ inch apart.

Problem fixed!

When A Potluck Is Planned...

With summer now in full swing, a useful tip when it comes to potlucks (be it family events and parties or office luncheons) and transporting a casserole without causing a huge mess. Secure the glass lid of the dish.

The easiest way to do this is to secure a rubber band on the handle of the lid and stretch it to attach to one of the side handles of the dish.

Then secure a second rubber band on the handle of the lid and stretch it to attach to the other side handle of the dish.

Then there is also the option of outsourcing the cooking. Many of our clients will contact us to help with their parties, events, and potlucks. We prepare the main dish and a few sides. This allows for others to bring what they really want to the party.

Let YaDa Chef provide a quote for your holiday needs. Big or small, we work with your budget and needs, coming up with inventive ideas and foods is what we do!

4th of July Parties - Family Fun!

It's that time of year when you begin to plan your Fourth of July celebration, and you want to include the kids in the fun too, of course! Check below for easy, budget-friendly ways to make the Fourth of July full of family fun!

Have the kids make small US flags and place them into red, white, and blue sand pails that have sand filler at the bottom! Turn this decoration into a game. Divide the kids into two teams and have them run, grab a flag, and quickly walk back to the team line, where the next person must do the same. The team that has all of the flags in hand most quickly wins! Let the kids take the flags home as a goody!

The kids can make a sidewalk chalk mural. Have red, white, and blue sidewalk chalk on hand to give to the kids and let them create their own patriotic mural. They can create an American flag, fireworks, the Washington Monument, etc. This is a great activity for a dry Fourth of July Day!
Boil a dozen eggs and color some red and blue (be sure to keep some white)! Have an Egg Spoon Relay Race. Divide the kids into two teams, and provide each team with a spoon and eggs. The kids must balance a colored egg on their spoon and walk quickly from one end of the yard to the other and return. If the egg drops, the team member must begin again. The first team with all members completing the relay race wins!

For older kids, water balloons will be loads of fun. A fun twist on traditional water balloon games is to create a small hole in each balloon, and then fill it with water. Let the kids toss the leaking balloon, which will become a bit of a time bomb as you don't want to be the last one holding it when it finally runs out of water! Quick, easy, and fun!

Play classic relay races and picnic games, such as ring toss, sack race, and three-legged race.
Have the girls add red, white, and blue star beads to their shoelaces for added fun.

The kids can make their own creative rockets with cardboard tubes, tin foil, craft paper, tissue paper, glue, markers, ribbon, and child-friendly scissors.

DON'T FORGET ABOUT FOOD!

Let YaDa Chef provide the food so you do not have to. What better way to enjoy the day when someone else is taking care of all the work.

Or do what many of our clients do, they order the primary foods for the day's festivities and have the rest of the family bring their favorite items, potluck style.

Galic Tip Continued...

As a continuation to our previous post, we received a question from Marion with Passion Parties (http://www.merchantcircle.com/business/Passion.Parties.by.Marion.Mahopac.NY.845-284-7013):

"Great info. I heard that lemon juice will subdue the garlic smell on your hands ; is that true? Also, whenever I see TV chefs mince garlic they sprinkle salt on it first. Why do they do that?"

Regarding the use of salt and mincing garlic, the salt will help break the garlic down and make mincing easier.

However, remember that by adding salt to the garlic, you are there by adding salt to your recipe. If your recipe does not call for salt, do not use it when mincing your garlic. If you do add salt to the garlic, decrease the salt in your recipe accordingly.

Did you know, by wetting your fingers with water from time to time will prevent them from getting sticky from the garlic?

As for removing the smell of garlic off your hands using lemon juice will work.

There are many suggestions for getting rid of that garlic smell. Some people suggest soaking the hands in lemon juice or vinegar for about five minutes and then washing with warm water and soap. In all cases, if you've gotten garlic under your fingernails, you'll have to use a good nailbrush, or the tines of a fork too or you won't get the garlic smell off your fingers.

Another suggested method for getting rid of that garlic smell is to rub your hands with table salt and then again, washing thoroughly with soap and water. This too may work, but salt, and lemon for that matter, will not be a good idea if you have small cuts on your hands. The old expression "rubbing salt into your wounds" applies.

Probably the most common suggestion for getting the garlic smell off your fingers is to rub your hands against stainless steel after chopping garlic. While there are metal bars that you can purchase for this express purpose, a stainless steel spoon, or sink will do! It's said that the molecules in stainless steel bond with the molecules of garlic left on your hands, effectively removing the garlic smell off your fingers.

Many suggests the stainless steel method works equally well with onions, and some suggest that if you hold a stainless steel spoon in your mouth while chopping onions, your eyes won't get weepy. Of course the spoon may obscure your vision, and you might get a cut from a knife if you can't see what you're chopping.
